Jura error codes: messages and fixes

Find out what the individual error codes and messages on a Jura machine mean, and how to deal with them — which problems you can sort out yourself, and which will need a professional repair.
Jura machines are held in high regard by their owners. They are used in the hospitality trade as much as by coffee lovers at home and in the office. The brand is known above all for quality and reliability. Unfortunately that does not mean a Jura will never fail. Like any appliance, it is not free of faults and problems. The good news is that not every error message means a trip to a workshop. Look through the list of Jura error codes we have put together and find out how to deal with the fault.
Jura error 1 and error 2
Error code 1 and error code 2 in an automatic Jura machine both indicate that the thermoblock is not reaching the temperature needed to brew coffee. It may mean that the temperature sensor monitoring the thermoblock has failed. The first thing to do is check the temperature sensor and its contacts for corrosion. If the sensor is the cause, replacing it is the best way forward.
Another possible cause of error 1 or 2 is damage to the thermoblock itself. Limescale precipitating out of the water during use can contribute to this. Scale settling on the thermoblock can block it, so that it never reaches the required temperature. In that case the thermoblock has to be replaced.
If the thermoblock works properly and reaches the required temperature but error code 1 or 2 still appears, it may point to a failure of the control board. Unfortunately, repairing this fault on a Jura machine is a significant expense.
Jura error 3
Error code 3 on a Jura machine means trouble reaching the temperature needed to produce steam — a problem with the steam thermoblock. Tracking the cause down starts much as it does above: first check the steam generator's temperature sensor. If you find damage, the sensor needs replacing.
The steam thermoblock itself may also have failed, as a result of limescale build-up for instance. Repairing this component means replacing it.
If you have ruled out both the steam generator's temperature sensor and the steam thermoblock, and error 3 on your Jura machine persists, it may indicate a fault in the electronic control board.
Jura error 4
If your Jura machine returns error 4, the steam system has exceeded its maximum temperature. The culprit may be the steam generator's temperature sensor, or a blown thermal fuse that should have prevented overheating. The first step in diagnosing error 4 is a visual check of the thermal sensor's cable for damage, and of its contacts for corrosion. Check the fuse visually too. If these parts are damaged, they need replacing.
If neither the sensor nor the fuse is at fault, the next component that may be behind error 4 is the steam thermoblock itself. Damage to it is often the result of accumulated limescale, in which case it will have to be replaced.
Error 4 on a Jura machine can also appear when the electronic board fails, which means buying a new one. In that situation it is worth consulting a repair workshop and considering whether the repair is worth doing at all.
Jura error 5
Error 5 on a Jura machine signals that the thermoblock is not heating correctly. The most common cause is significant corrosion or deposits on the thermoblock, which should be replaced. At the same time, as in the cases described above, it is worth checking the sensor and the fuse.
If you are confident that the thermoblock, sensor and fuse are all working properly and error 5 still appears, you can suspect the control board. The only way to clear the error is to replace the board with a working one, which can be a considerable expense.
Jura error 6
Error code 6 on a Jura machine indicates that the ceramic valve has failed. This fault most often appears in heavily used machines, or in appliances that are not descaled consistently. The solution to error code 6 is to replace the valve.
Jura error 7
If error 7 appears on your Jura machine, there are at least two possible faults to consider. The first is a damaged ceramic valve that cannot reach the correct position. The second, and most common, cause of error 7 is an encoder failure. In both cases the solution is to replace the affected part.
Jura error 8 and error 17
Error 8 and error 17 both point to the brew unit not working correctly — they indicate that the brew group is having trouble positioning itself properly. This can happen when the brew unit is dirty, for example with coffee residue, in which case a thorough clean is needed. Other possible causes of error 8 or error 17 on Jura machines include damaged piston seals and a damaged brew unit drive.
Jura error 22
Error 22 on a Jura machine means the appliance is having trouble recognising the Claris water filter. This can happen if a filter other than a genuine Jura Claris cartridge has been fitted, or if the cartridge itself is damaged.
Error 22 can also be caused by the RFID sensor responsible for recognising the Claris filter. This kind of damage most often results from the sensor being accidentally soaked with water.
The Jura "Fill system" message
Besides error codes, a Jura machine can also display various messages indicating that something is wrong. One of them is "Fill system". Seeing it means there is a problem with the water circuit. The causes can vary widely: a leak in the water circulation system caused by damaged hoses or an O-ring, a scaled-up water pump, or a failed flow meter.
